IoT Project Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. It’s located in Rotterdam and holds a unique collection of paintings, sculptures and utensils/objects. As a pilot assignment with an external party, we proposed the most interested students to improve the security system of the museum, taking in account Automation of security, Remote control security of elements, and of course Internet of Things. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was kind enough to welcome our students and arrange an interview with the security staff. The staff heard all the ideas of the students and gave feedback.

The project was divided in several sessions: it started with a kick off where students were given inspiration; an excursion to the museum so that the students could talk with the museum security staff; and continued with designing of the concept, and building a prototype.

David Jonas from Patching Zone was present in the sessions to advise the students how to implement the technology on their ideas; and support them when facing obstacles and technical issues. One of the groups had the idea of using drones to improve the surveillance and security of the museum. To do so, their project was to connect the joystick of the drone to a breadboard, and through it to the Arduino. By having the Arduino connected to the laptop, you could control the drone from anywhere. The final evaluation and results of the project was quite satisfactory.
